Music 101 – Basic Music Theory
30 hours of lecture.
No prerequisite. Students may also take a test to “place out” of this class. The cost to take this test is $40
In this course, students learn the basic music theory that is necessary and valuable for Sound Engineers and Music Producers.
Topics include:
- Musical Instruments – what they sound like
- Reading music / Playing Notes (student is issued a small musical keyboard)
- Rhythm
- Harmony 1 (Staffs, Half Steps / Whole Steps, Sharps / Flats, Intervals)
- Harmony 2 (Key Signatures, Circle of Fifths, Scales)
- Harmony 3 (Chords, Chord Progressions, Substitutions)
- Ear Training
- Melody (Creating, Altering)
- Song Form / Chart Reading / Writing
- Arranging
